Wassailing is the pagan tradition of singing and dancing in dormant orchards to ensure a good harvest in the year to come. By enticing good spirits to the orchard with the toasting of apple cider and loud merrymaking, whilst simultaneously scaring away bad spirits that may come to wreak havoc on and ruin crops, the orchards are protected for the growing season. Over time, wassailing was adopted by other groups of people and turned into traditions that we know of today, like Christmas caroling.
